While I prefer Cato from the original series, Ponton works well with the new series. Jean Reno is returning to the role although with so many other detectives on hand, he may have reduced screen time this time around.

I don't believe the other detective and expert characters are bumbling. Alfred Molina will be a bit of a comic foil for Steve Martin in the same vein as Dreyfus, but his character is not bumbling. Sometimes even the trades provide misinformation.

While I agree three Martin films will likely be the maximum number, I honestly suspect they will attempt to find a new Clouseau after resting the series for a decade or so. The franchise means too much for MGM and Sony to throw away especially since they have yet to re-establish the cartoon series which is surely in their plans. If the untitled Martin sequel is a success, they will likely push for a third one for 2009 or 2010 and either an animated feature or a new cartoon series. I would also suspect a revival for the animated Inspector is on the backburner. MGM On Stage's plans for Broadway adaptations will likely get off the ground in the next decade as well. It is all part of how a franchise is leveraged in today's market. The role is certainly harder to replace than James Bond or Tarzan, but after Mr. Martin's success, I don't think anyone will ever be tempted to try to reintroduce the series with a new character in the mold of Clifton Sleigh or Officer Gambrelli.

In the event of Mr. Martin's untimely passing, I presume they would get a hot young sitcom star to play Clifton Sleigh...

The IMDB listing reads like it came directly from MGM publicity so I have some hope this is correct. The source of the pitch was the original articles about the Neustadter/Weber script, so it probably is accurate. I'll be very surprised if we see Cato in this film or any PANTHER veterans as the whole approach taken by Mr. Martin, Mr. Simonds, and Mr. Levy with the first film was to use the original series as a jumping-off point for something fairly fresh. They did not remake the original series and I wouldn't expect them start now. As shooting draws closer, confirmation of Kevin Kline, Jean Reno, and Emily Mortimer's participation will likely be made public.

I do think we'll be getting something closer to the classic series this time than we did with Mr. Martin's first outing. We'll have a better idea when test screenings begin next year.

It was on eBay USA. It is the Region 2 DVD Warner Bros. just released in Germany. It is an authorized release but you have to make sure your player is multi-region. Widescreen, remastered transfer with English and German audio tracks and subtitles. No trailer or extra's.

FIENDISH PLOT isn't the worst comedy ever made, but most of it falls flat. There are a few good moments...mainly at the start. Mr. Sellers was far better playing in someone else's universe than trying to fashion his own from scratch. His ailing health and co-writers' relative inexperience hardly helped. There was no strong hand behind the camera to hold things together either. For all his genius, Mr. Sellers could falter when surrounded by yes-men just like anyone else. I would love to have a go at the outtakes if they survived. While I'm pleased Zev Braun has got this released on DVD in Germany, it would be nice if extra features could be located for Region 1 release.

My real name is Bill Maynard. I live in Ohio. I work in contracts, but hope to one day make my living as a full-time writer. I am a husband and father. I have contributed to ezboard's Pink Panther site and the now-defunct BlakeEdwards.com usually under the name of Colonel Al Durai. My favorite Panther is A Shot in the Dark. I own all the films on DVD as well as the novelizations and most of the screenplays. I have an extensive collection of books, DVDs, and CDs that occupy my time when I'm not working, being a Dad, or writing.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes. I was directed here by the generosity of another member who understands that my work schedule precludes me visiting as much as I would wish.

I have been a fan since STRIKES AGAIN was released when I was in Kindergarten. I used to make audio tapes of the film off of television and wrote adaptations of the films in journals while in grade school. By junior high, I was writing and directing audio plays based on the films and working on a story treatment for a second Clifton Sleigh adventure. I abandoned the series around 1985 as I had most of the series on SelectaVision Video Discs which became obsolete and I lost faith believing the series was dead.
I received a VHS of Return (the J2 Communications release) for my 18th birthday in 1989, it was a throwaway gift that reignited my passion for the series. Months before Son was released, I owned the screenplay and was building a collection of Panther scripts. I started several second scripts for Benigni as an ambitious if foolhardy twentysomething between 1993 and 1997 and inundated folks like the late Tony Adams and Jeff Kleeman (formerly of MGM/UA) trying to get them to give me a break. I hounded George Feltenstein when he was at MGM/UA Home Video to get the Arkin film released (finally succeeded in 1996). The five classic Panthers were my first DVD purchase. The best thing about the Steve Martin film was the opportunity to own the entire series on DVD for the first time.
I am an ardent supporter of Blake Edwards and willing to give Steve Martin and Bob Simonds the benefit of the doubt that they can do a better job with a script they didn't inherit the second time around. And yes, my wife and kids are all fans of the series as well. The best things to come of my Panther connection has been my involvement with The One-Take Tanney Diaries (a series of emails with Blake Edwards' rep company member, Dr. Herb Tanney that I've had published) and developing a friendship with the incomparable Jason Simos of The Peter Sellers Appreciation Society. I look forward to 2007 and production of the next Panther film.
