Benigni. No question about it.
Martin tried to be Clouseau. No one can be Clouseau, but Sellers. And Sellers is dead!

He's dead? For over 15 years?
Why isn't this anywhere?
RIP, Andre... Your Francois portrayal won't be forgotten...

Plus, Ted Wass himself didn't seem very comfortable doing the film. You MAY say that it added to the character's tension, but I dunno... It just didn't seem very fun for him a film to do.
And he said so, apparently.

I say Roberto Benigni. The film may be mediocre (I still like it), but Benigni is always fun to watch. And he clearly had a lot of fun doing this film.
Ted Wass was one TERRIBLE miscast on the role. I say, if Rowan Atkinson had been Clifton Sleigh, the film would've been quite a lot funnier...

I could only see him as Clouseau in Roger-Moore-like capacity. Meaning it would be Clouseau post-surgery.
Yes, that would do.

Don't disagree with all that... But the character himself acts more like George Lytton, don't you think?
Besides, that way, it adds to his importance to the series. I mean, Niven's Lytton does mention in CURSE that Clouseau thought that George took over after Sir Charles retired. Maybe RETURN is where he bases it...

Its no less contrived than saying he's actually Sir Charles.
I can prove its valid: Colonel Sharky, by that time, probably never even knew how Sir Charles looked like - so its easy to believe its him, by asking people like, say, the Fat man.
To add, George's name could very well be George Charles Lytton, thus one other reason to use that name. Another reason would be, he's hunted after for frauds (like in the original PANTHER). Claudine knows him as Charles only, and never met his real uncle (David Niven) either. So thats a reason for her to believe him. George knows he has to act, before the authorities can even link him with his uncle, thus blowing up his cover. Thus his motivations for going after the thief.
And for Clouseau... Well, I don't tell that, do I? That man in an answer himself.

David Niven, absolutely.
I'll go as far as to say that David was the only one who played him. What do I mean?
I mean to say, that Christopher Plummer's character in ROTPP is not really Sir Charles Litton, but George using the name Sir Charles Litton. His complete demeanor and mannerisms clearly dictate a much more frivolous character, more cunning and, well, cruel (poor fingers...) than the Sir Charles we know - not to mention how impossibly young Sir Charles is in the movie.
So, I here say that I believe, that George Litton didn't appear only in TPP and COFTPP, but also ROTPP, played by Christopher Plummer!
What do you say?

Agreed, Charla. I always felt that, too.

No one should do Clouseau. I want Steve Martin to quit playing right now! And burn all copies of the film (except one for Clouseau, who likes it so much).
I hate Martin as Clouseau.... Oh my.

I don't want Martin as Clouseau. Kill him!
But then, it wouldn't make much sense for a PP without Martin (?) wouldn't it?
I don't know...

I actually have been a Pink Panther fan all my life. The Pink Panther I ever saw, fully, was RETURN. I got hooked, and watched STRIKES AGAIN and REVENGE, which got me more excited, then the rest... Except for INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU, I've never seen that until this year. Its OK, but not like the rest (better than CURSE actually, and certainly better than TPP06).
I really love, love, loved the Peter Sellers PANTHERs. The worst thing about them, is that they never finished the series off with a style (unless TRAIL, CURSE and SON is stylish ending for you..).

Well, to be honest, I hated Martin as Clouseau in this film. Its not only because he's playing a character totally owned by Sellers (its like Heath Ledger trying out Marlon Brando's Vito Corleone - its absurd!), but also that he genuinely annoying! I couldn't stand him! I wanted to fast-forward his scenes so to just not watch him anymore. And when that happens, you've lost the concept, all along. I mean, no matter his insane stupidity, Clouseau was always likeable and sympathetic, even when the character was truly egotistical and selfish. I don't get that from Martin. All I see is a ridiculously written character, played ridiculously.
I really hated, hated, hated Martin's Clouseau.

I watched it.
Let me say, at first, that I have been a Movie Pink Panther fan, all my life. As far as I can remember, I loved the PP movies - all of them. Even the stinky ones.
Before I saw this movie, I thought that the other ones were bad. Now, I know they're better than others, because they are not like this one!
I didn't like it.
I didn't like Kline as Dreyfus. He seemed uninterested in the part, and he clearly didn't fit the material.
I didn't like Jean Reno. He didn't fit the material.
And most of all... Steve Martin. There is, an excellent actor, who terribly mis-cast. Its not like he even tries to be his own or Sellers, he does not fit the material. He is NOT Clouseau. Not in any stretch of the imagination.
Clouseau was the result of Sellers' input into the character and Edwards' input as well. None of them is here.
The whole film feels tired, self-righteous and, well, unfunny. There was nothing funny about the film, at all. I laughed only a couple of times (the fart in the recording studio made the most laugh for me).
Clouseau, with all due respect (sorry not to point out this forum is great, BTW), this film cannot possibly be better than the last four. And certainly not REVENGE - tired or not, Sellers could play Clouseau in his sleep.
I think there are three big problems with this film - Direction, Story and Cast. The whole film was shot terribly, the story was weak for a reboot, and it was terribly, terribly, terribly miscast. I always said it back in 1988, A FISH CALLED WANDA, that Kevin Kline would've been the perfect Clouseau in a reboot. And after FATHER OF THE BRIDE, I was convinced that Steven Martin would've been the ideal Dreyfus. You see, Martin can play intelligent characters with obsessive tendancies that are often paranoid. And Kline has proven with WANDA that he can play someone who succeeds in his target, despite his idiocy, which the whole point of Clouseau's character!
I was terrified when I heard the news of the casting back a few years ago. But I thought I could give the film a chance. Now, I realize my gut feeling was wrong.
Anyway, good for you that you all enjoyed this film. I didn't. But, if we all agreed, it'd be boring, wouldn't it....
