there's no disputing that Peter Sellers was the original and best at what he did, but of all those who have tried to fill his shoes over the years, which one has done the best job??
for me, it comes down to Roger Moore and Steve Martin, but i'm not gonna cast my vote quite yet...
what about the rest of you??

Roberto Benigni. He did an oustanding job making a character based on Clouseau but his own man, if that makes any sense. I really wish they would persue with Jacques Clouseau Jr. and try a second movie, even if it was just a 'direct-to-video' kind of thing
I can't say any of the other Clouseaus can top Peter. I enjoyed Roger Moore's performance, but I can't classify that as a Clouseau performance.. It wasn't Clouseau..the whole "plastic surgery" idea...and it's more like Roger Moore being Inspector Clouseau being James Bond..hence I enjoy it in the same context as Benigni's character.. It's a great reinterpretation of Clouseau in a new character / context.
But no, there is no other Clouseau than Peter Sellers. Like I've said before, Steve Martin did a good job reinventing Clouseau, but there simply cannot be a (Chief) Inspector Jacques Clouseau like Peter's definitive Clouseau.

well for me, it came down to Roger Moore and Steve Martin, and i've gone with Steve Martin for originality... Moore did a fabulous job, too, IMO, but he was more or less just playing Peter Sellers, whereas Steve Martin was really reinventing the character, which takes a lot of guts... and Martin's reinvention was much better than the previous attempts to create a new character by Wass or Benigni... it may not be totally solid reasoning, by some of your standards, but it works for me...

Benigni. No question about it.
Martin tried to be Clouseau. No one can be Clouseau, but Sellers. And Sellers is dead!

Alan Arkin or Roger Moore. To be fair Arkin was Clousea for the whole film and Moore was hardly in CotPP. So I say Alan Arkin.

Roberto from SotPP. Roger Moore was good for his one scene.
Didn't like Alan Arkin much. His potrayal of Clouseau was too winy, gripy, and over the top. And I've always hated the "I ruin everything I touch" scene.

Yeah I agree with you about Benigini. he wa sjust over the top and stupid. And some of the things he said werejust so unfunny it just made me cringe like "That felt Guuud" and when his sister did it that was worse.
