A SHOT IN THE DARK. By far, the objectively best movie of the series - and Peter Sellers' best performance as Inspector Clouseau. One of the best performances in film history, in fact.
And Clouseau, just two pages ago, you chose CURSE over 2006 TRAVESTY. Right?

CURSE>2006, but 2006>SON.
I consider SON to be far superior to CURSE.
Whats your opinion?
He said Curse was better than IC, and TPP06 was better than Son.

Clouseau, you surprised me when you said CURSE over 2006, but 2006 over CURSE. I always thought CURSE was the worst one of the old series, and even though I have it above 2006, I still place SON above it.
How is CURSE better than SON, exactly? Interested to know...

Oh, come on. RETURN is GREAT, but STRIKES AGAIN is when the series reached its peak. When hilarity was the codename for laughter in this series. The series' most enduring entry, and its funniest, too. And Sellers' defining Clouseau accent, too.
Also, the best title sequence, best Kato fight, best Dreyfus performance and favorite finale.
As far as I am concerned, if this was the last entry (well, this or REVENGE), I would be a happy man, with a series of complete comedy masterpieces, to enjoy as a fanboy. Instead, we got TRAIL, CURSE, SON and the abomination that bears the title of the original - the 2006 travesty re-imagining.
Oh, well.. RETURN is great, too. Almost as great. But sometimes it takes itself too seriously, and there isn't enough Clouseau in it. SHOT and STRIKES AGAIN had a fair share, you know...

Actually, Clouseau for me, isn't a character that is free to intepret in many ways - there really is one Clouseau, and if anyone plays him, he oughts to play him the same way.
Its not like Bond, which is a literally character and can be translated in many ways - this is a character that Sellers HIMSELF created from scratch. Without him, he would've been another inconsequential role in Peter Ustinov's career. But it was Sellers that MADE him. That truly shaped the character.
Martin didn't do it for me. He was terrible. He came off as unsympathetic idiot, when he should've come out as a sympathetic idiot. Thats the difference between Sellers and Martin - Sellers, no matter what, always made Clouseau a character to relate to, while Martin is very well irritating, annoying and downright pathetic. I would never have become a fan of the films from Martin's effort, I can tell you that...

I don't see neither as nightmares. At least, not in the same chance. I just take two realities - one that has all five Sellers films and the Arkin one, and one where all happened. In both cases, the 2006 film is a nightmare of Dreyfus'.

About Clouseau Jr. - He's happy, actually more of a fool-hearty, but he's still his own character. He isn't Clousaeu - He's Jacques Gambrelli, or Clouseau Jr. if you want, but a different character to explore, really. Martin, follishly, tried to be THE man, when obviously no one, and I mean, NO ONE could ever be. Arkin did an admirable job, but he looks like a poor man's Clouseau, nonetheless.
Dreyfus, I'd like you count my vote for INSPECTOR. Doesn't change anything, but I consider INSPECTOR better than CURSE.
Now, REVENGE wins this round for me. TRAIL is an excellent tribute, by all means, but IMO, REVENGE is the last worthwile PANTHER out there. Ever since, only mediocrity rules this franchise.
Its also the last ever time Sellers played the legendary Inspector Clouseau (Chief-Inspector). Even if he seems kinda bored in some scenes here and there, he still rules the film. He's funny as anything you can imagine.
Great, great movie. My only gripe in there, is that it is not explicitly stated that this film is/should be set before STRIKES AGAIN, because of the Dreyfus thing.

Thanks Dreyfus.
And it SON OF THE PINK PANTHER, for me. Both films aren't THAT good, but I am rather fond of SON for a couple of reasons: 1)It was a film that provided Dreyfus with a logical progression of character (acceptance of the man Clouseau) and finally settling him down (for good) with an ex-fling of Clouseau's. 2)It stars Roberto Benigni, who did a much better job than that pretentious Steve Martin could've done, for the fact that he didn't pretend to be Clouseau himself, but his son. 3)It introduced me to Benigni and his work, which is fabulous (JOHNNY STECHINNO and THE MONSTER are highly enjoyable comedies, while LIFE IS BEAUTIFULL is his equivelant to Sellers' BEING THERE). 4)Its the last Blake Edwards film, and even if its obvious his work doesn't compare to his past glory, its nice to see him handle a film again, much less a Panther film. 5)The cartoon is the series' best after STRIKES AGAIN and RETURN. I love it!
And the absolute best rendition of the Pink Panther theme by Henry Mancini by the end of the film... Mancini's last go on the PP theme! Christopher Whats-his-name can't hold a candle to him.
Anyway, SON over PINK PANTHER RE-IMAGINED TRAVESTY 2006, for me...

Then you use SON or TRAIL, even. Not CURSE, and God forbid, not the remake!
And I like the Dreyfus character, as well, in SON. He finally matured enough to live with the Clouseau image.
SON really showed a genuine development for Dreyfus. That alone makes it better than 2006 TRAVESY EDITION.

In your case, I'd avoid the non-Sellers movies by a mile. A SHOT is the best introductory PANTHER for friends. I've tested it myself...

Steve Martin is embarrasing as Clouseau, Robert Benigni isn't, as Jr. Thats speaks for itself.

I love silly. Fro Pete's sake, I love Monty Python, too.
But PANTHER 2006 is just not good, not at all...

I don't see how could the new PP could make anyone laugh, as the majority of the jokes were just cheap, silly jokes, like the sexual innuedo between Martinseau (sorry, can't bring myself writing Clouseau on Martin's character) and his secretary, the "who cares?" line and all that.
The 2006 TRAVESTY EDITION is really, really a bad film...
