I usually show people "The Pink Panther Strikes Back". It's not just about Sellers' performance of Clouseau which is beyond exaggerated hence more hilarious, but you can't forget Lom with Dreyfus, they both made that film a classic.

yeah probably that "Inspector Clouseau" movie, because it doesn't have the classic lineup and is too different. "Trail" might be pieced together and whatever but it is nice in a nostalgic kind of way, I get sad watching it though because it sinks in that there can never be another Inspector Clouseau, another Peter Sellers ever again. That film for me is like a personal eulogy. It really makes me sad, especially the end.

I own both drafts of the screenplay for starters and I spent time researching microfiche files of The New York Times, The LA Times, and The Hollywood Reporter to see what was reported at the time of the film's development. You are welcome to use the information. As a courtesy mention this board as your source. I try to mention when I'm using content I first posted at ezboard's Panther site or on the now-defunct BlakeEdwards.com. That's amazing. Thank you for the information, of course I will credit this source, but I thank you for your contributions as well that is great. Is there any way I can get a copy of the draft screenplays? If you use paypal, maybe I can send you some money to cover postage etc? And all this research you've done.. Is it part of a job you do? Do you have a website or something? Are you compiling this for a project?? Sorry for all the questions, you've just put so much work into it that's all

no problem clouseau.. yes i guess it is something unfortunately we will never know about.. sounds like it would have been very different.. in fact it sounds like it might have gone back to the idea of the earlier movies, not as 'stupid' as the later ones like pink panther strikes back if that makes any sense (not saying theyre stupid movies, but i found the earlier ones arent as crazy hah

Ok I'm really sorry for the delay..Here is all the information listed about "Romance of the Pink Panther", from the Peter Sellers biography "Mr Strangelove"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Romance of the Pink Panther would be different to the other Panthers, Peter told the Hollywood columnist Marilyn Beck. Clouseau will 'expose a side of himself no one has seen. He's going to be involved with a woman who's deeply in love with him, and we'll see his reaction to that.' There was still no word on who would play the woman, Anastasia Puissance. In fact, the script was not yet completed at the time. According to Peter, production wouldn't begin until August 1980, at the earliest.' Reportedly, Peter would be getting $3 million up front for the film - half of which, he claimed, had already been paid. He would also get 10 per cent of the gross. Estimating from the financial success of the last Panther, The Romance of the Pink Panther alone might earn him $8 million.
That Sidney Poitier rather than Blake Edwards was to direct The Romance of the Pink Panther seems not to have been the result of animosity between Peter and Blake. He'd filmed a cameo for Edward's latest picture, 10 (1979), which starred Dudley Moore, Julie Andrews and Bo Derek. Peter played drums in a jazz band, but the scene was cut before the film's release.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Peter had been working on the script of The Romance of the Pink Panther with a writer named Jim Moloney; the film's producer, Danny Rissner, had sent Peter some script notes, and Peter, after reading them on the yacht in the Aegean, had threatened to jump overboard. If UA baulked, he would drop the project.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Blake Edwards attempted to assume control of The Romance of the Pink Panther after Peter's death and offered the role of Inspector Clouseau to Dudley Moore, who turned it down.
Ok that's the most important parts mentioned about it. Sorry I hope I didn't dissapoint your anticipation hah.
EDIT: by the way im working on a pink panther movie fan website i decided, something else to occupy my time with, and i plan already to get as much information about "romance of the pink panther" as i can in it.. as a project

Thanks Clouseau. It's not a very big feature though, but it's maybe a paragraph and a half about it. I seriously might consider getting that script. Or I'll wait until next pay, next week, yeah I need to save a bit of money.
I'm new here by the way, sorry. Awesome board here. I've been a fan of peter sellers and the pink panther movies since i was born, I'm 20 now. Recently got a credit card, well not a full out one, but just one linked to my savings account bla bla bla, and I have discovered the merits of ebay.. Some valuables.. I'm not a big movie collector..I'm more of a music fan..but this movie is an exception. Anyway sorry I'll shut up with my life story.

Yeah, the scripts are around..i saw then on sale on at least one website, probably from the website Clouseau saw. A few people I have come across on various forums when searching in Yahoo have obtained copies of it, but I haven't been able to get in contact with them.. I'm from Australia though.. So it would cost more.. I would buy one though.. I dunno...
--(SPOILER ALERT FOLLOWING??)
I've got a Peter Sellers biography called "Mr Strangelove" which describes the storyline a bit.. I can't remember it all offhand but I recall that it's different to the other Pink Panther movies; apparently there is still the typical cato fight scene near the beginning but basically alot of it involves Clouseau romancing some underworld figure taking her out, and there is some typical idiocy but alot of it is him and her going out on dates or something like that, and the authorities are trying to convict her and have her arrested or something.. and eventually Clouseau leaves the police force and 'turns to the dark side' ..i dunno ... i can't remember, but I will edit this post and copy from the book when I get home with more specific details

The reporter in "Trail of the Pink Panther", I forget the actress' name, but her accent is so annoying. I swear that's what makes the movie intolerable for me; I still enjoy watching it but I wish they picked a better reporter, I would enjoy the movie so much more..Just the way she talks, and when there's the moments that she really gets up herself and nosy or puts any feeling or emotion into her voice..I don't know if it makes sense, but..her voice is just annoying.
Oh yeah, and the Psychiatrist in "Trail" as well...They should have got one of the previous actors who played the psychiatrist to do it; that guy's voice is so irritating. It sounds like his tounge is glued to his teeth or his gums or something.

Yeah, I always thought the structure or storyline wasn't right.. you guys did a good job detailing that. I suppose after Shot in the Dark their interests for the movie were to keep the comedic value though so I don't think they would have bothered maintaining any sense of continuity in the storyline

I don't know. It's hard to say. I love them all they have their own merits. I'll have to go with "Strikes Again" though because that was the first PP movie I saw and is still a classic for me

thecolonel93 that is some outstanding information. So I guess contrary to other reports, Peter Sellers was going to be considered for this movie, but not the character of Clouseau.. I suppose Moore was going to have the starring role in this over Peter.. and he was going to have a new role..
What's the talk about the Romance trailer though?? Andre Clouseau??
And where did you get this info from?

They probably just wanted something different..to be inspired, for the longevity of Clouseau
