I was convinced it was Alan Arkin as well until The World's Greatest Panther Fan, Jason Simos showed me the error of my ways. Sadly, Mr. Arkin is unwilling to comment on his brief involvement in the series. He will always be my second favorite Clouseau.

Assuming that is correct, I think the answer to the birth date question was September 8, 1920. Herbert Lom says something of the sort when he programs data into Aldous the Huxley 600 in CURSE. Checking would be cheating so I'm going on memory.

It always makes me cringe when I hear that date in Trail. i don't see anything really terrible with it... all they've done (assuming that date is correct) is make Clouseau exactly five years older than Sellers... that's not a terrible stretch, IMO... it's certainly not as bad as it could have been, at least! he spoke in Sink Pink and in Pink Ice, if i remember correctly...
now name two Panther cartoon shorts that had a narrator... Is it Jet Pink & Shocking Pink?no, neither of those is correct, i'm afraid...

It always makes me cringe when I hear that date in Trail. Well that would mean he is 62 which i suppose is relatively old. Maybe Clouseau should have retired at the end of Revenge.

Assuming REVENGE is set in the year of its release that would have only made Clouseau 57 which is a bit young to retire. However, people often begin thinking of retirement at that age and we had Clouseau considering running for public office after "a few more years on the force" in STRIKES AGAIN. He did, in fact, retire in the July 1980 rewrite of ROMANCE. Finally, I think the decision was made to make the character older than Mr. Sellers because he was supposed to have served in the resistance during WWII (Mr. Sellers was only 19 when the war ended) according to both STRIKES AGAIN and TRAIL. Clouseau has also been married and pursuing the Phantom for nearly two decades in the original so the character would always have been intended to be somewhat older than Mr. Sellers or Mr. Edwards, for that matter.
