the first incarnation of The Inspector appeared only in the title sequence for The Pink Panther (1963)...

a new Inspector was introduced for the title sequence of A Shot in the Dark (1964)...

based loosely on the character from ASITD's titles, and the only Incarnation to have an audible voice, The Inspector underwent another makeover before starring in 30 theatrical cartoon shorts between 1964 and 1969... this Inspector also starred in the title sequence of Inspector Clouseau (1968)...

having been MIA since 1969, when Peter Sellers returned to the role of Clouseau in 1975, The Inspector was redesigned to look more like Sellers... this incarnation appeared in the title sequences of The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), and Trail of the Pink Panther (1982)...

following Sellers' death and Clouseau's disappearance, the new Inspector character was based on Ted Wass' Sgt. Sleigh character for the title sequence of Curse of the Pink Panther (1983)...

ten years out of the limelight, The Inspector emerged again, this time modelled after Roberto Benigni's Inspector Clouseau Jr. character for the title sequence of Son of the Pink Panther (1993)...

after Son, The Inspector disappeared until being redesigned yet again, this time modelled to look like Steve Martin's version of Inspector Clouseau for the title sequence of The Pink Panther (2006)...

I think the character worked out best looking the way he did there.

And as JSCartoonFan said, I do love the 1993 Pink Panther TV show one too, but since he's pretty much based on the 1964-1969 one, the statement is still correct - that's the only animated Clouseau to speak (although it's a different voice in the 1993 one).
