between March 1969 and May 1971, DePatie-Freleng (who also produced the Pink Panther cartoons) released 17 theatrical cartoons wherein a red ant was incessantly chased by a blue aardvark... these shorts later appeared on episodes of the long-running Pink Panther saturday morning TV show, and could be compared in a sense to other cartoons of the era such as Roadrunner, Tom & Jerry, and Sylvester and Tweety... as with Sylvester and Tweety, the characters in The Ant and the Aardvark could talk...
now, below, i have included a list of each episode of The Ant and the Aardvark, along with each short's original theatrical release date and a brief description (as best i could without too many spoilers) of the goings on of each one... hope you find this guide useful!
- The Ant and the Aardvark (3/5/69) - our first introduction to the little red Ant and his big blue predator; the Aardvark goes hungry as usual while the Ant raids a picnic
- Hasty But Tasty (3/6/69) - perhaps the closest to a Roadrunner cartoon; the Aardvark tries to catch a picnic-raiding, motorcycle-driving Ant
- The Ant from UNCLE (4/2/69) - a generic chase story, but still enjoyable for what it is; we also learn the Ant’s first name, Charlie!
- I’ve Got Ants in My Plans (5/14/69) - the Aardvark crashes a $100/plate dinner held by a group of ants; the other ants abandon Charlie, who is captured, but before he can be digested, a Green Aardvark comes along, and the two aardvarks compete over who will eat
- Technology, Phooey (6/25/69) - the Aardvark builds a computer to teach him how to catch the Ant
- Never Bug an Ant (9/12/69) - another generic chase story; this time, we hear the Ant call the Aardvark a few different names (Claude, Ben, Sam), though none of these is his real name
- Dune Bug (10/27/69) - the Ant takes a vacation to the beach, but the Aardvark is never far away; the life guard things the Aardvark is a dog, though, and keeps kicking him off the beach
- Isle of Caprice (12/18/69) - the Aardvark is marooned on one island, a group of ants are marooned on another, and a shark is in the water in between
- Scratch a Tiger (1/28/70) - the Ant, who pulled a thorn out of a tiger’s paw, enlists the help of the tiger to fend off the Aardvark the Ant and his family go picnic raiding
- Odd Ant Out (4/18/70) - the Green Aardvark is back, and he and our blue friend compete again, this time over a can of Chocolate Covered Ants
- Ants in the Pantry (6/10/70) - for whatever reason, someone calls Pest Control complaining of an ant problem; when the Aardvark gets there, though, the house is abandoned, and only our one Ant friend is there; the Aardvark still can’t catch the Ant, but he manages to destroy a good amount of the house
- Science Friction (6/18/70) - a scientist captures the Ant, who happens to be of a rare breed; the Aardvark attempts to steal the specimen, but the scientist plays bodyguard
- Mumbo Jumbo (9/27/70) - being a member of the Brotherhood of the Forest, the Ant finds protection in the form of his lodge mates
- The Froze Nose Knows (11/18/70) - a freak snow storm hits; the Aardvark has trouble catching the Ant in such wintry conditions; and his troubles are multiplied when a bear decides to use the Aardvark’s cave for hibernation
- Don’t Hustle an Ant with Muscle (12/27/70) - the Ant finds that taking multiple vitamin tablets gives him incredible strength, much to the Aardvark’s chagrin
- Rough Brunch (1/3/71) - a family of termites get fat lending protection to their cousin, the Ant, when the Aardvark chases him to a house they’re eating
- From Bed to Worse (5/16/71) - after being hit by a car, the Ant and the Aardvark are taken to an animal hospital, where the other patients and the nurse make it impossible for the Aardvark to eat the Ant
