as i mentioned before, i've recently been given a copy of Pink Panther Cocktail Party: Pink-a-licious drinks to seduce and entertain, and i hereby submit my review...
Hardcover
December 2004
64 pages
the reverse cover of the book reads:
so far, i've found this to be a quite interesting book... each page is illustrated by Shag in what i would call a unique throw-back to the psychadelic '60s style... the drawings of the Pink Panther and other characters are nothing like you would expect in one of the cartoon shorts, but they are interesting in their own way, if that makes sense... and as i see it, the illustrations in this book are what give it its real sense of style and class, true to Pink Panther form...
the layout to the book is very simple... there is a one-page introduction, followed by a 10-page guide to setting up your own bar, including a list of what utensils you need, a glossary of mixing terms, and a hints to improve your skills... after that, the rest of the book is divided in to 7 sections, with each section focusing on specific styles of drinks...
the first section of drinks may be the most interesting to Pink Panther fans, as it lists drinks whose names are crafted after characters from the Pink Panther series... each of the following is the name of a drink in this section: Cato, Clouseau, Colonel Sharkey, Inspector Dreyfus, Nuevo Clouseau, Phantom (aka Sir Charles Cocktail), Pink Panther (original), Pink Panther Cooler, Ponton, Simone's Champagne Shooter, and Xania...
the second section features drinks whose titles include the word "Pink", much like the titles of classic Panther cartoon shorts... titles here include things like Pink Cadillac and Pinkolada...
sections three through six are devoted to more popular/well-known drinks, ranging from the traditional Martini and Daiquiri to such interesting concoctions as the Slow Comfortable Screw and the White Russian...
the drinks in the last section are geared slightly more towards Pink Panther fans again, including such mixes as the ...Panther's Tail and the Pink Diamond...
wrap with a couple more pages of Shag's illustrations, and that's the end of the book... BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! the book also comes with a CD which includes the original Pink Panther theme by Henry Mancini and a new track called the Malibu Remix, which is more of a modern techno/dance version of the theme... the CD also includes a video for this Malibu Remix...
all-in-all, it's at least a very interesting novelty... the artwork alone makes it worth buying, IMO, but i must say that i fully intend to try out some of the pink-a-licious recipes i found in here...
