'Pink Panther' puts paws all over charts
By Thomas K. Arnold
Pink was in last week on DVD. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's "The Pink Panther" topped the national sales and rental charts for the week ending June 18, giving star Steve Martin his first double-whammy of the year.
Martin's last movie to come out on DVD, "Cheaper by the Dozen 2," was the top renter three weeks ago, but narrowly failed to take the No. 1 position on the VideoScan First Alert chart because of a strong challenge from Buena Vista's "High School Musical."
Finishing second on the sales and rental charts for the week was Warner's "16 Blocks," a cop drama from director Richard Donner (1978's "Superman") that stars Bruce Willis and grossed $36.9 million in theaters.
According to Home Media Retailing's market research department, "Pink Panther" generated $9.9 million in rental revenue its first week in stores, while "16 Blocks" earned $9.5 million.
Also new on the First Alert top 20 are "Dave Chappelle's Block Party," from Universal Studios, at No. 4; 20th Century Fox's teen comedy "Aquamarine," at No. 5; and Paramount's concert video "Neil Young -- Heart of Gold," at No. 9.
Magnolia Home Entertainment cracked the chart with "World's Fastest Indian," a film festival favorite starring Anthony Hopkins that debuted at No. 12, while the Warner film noir spoof "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" bowed at No. 18 and Paramount's "Beavis and Butt-Head -- The Mike Judge Collection: Volume 2" came in at No. 19.
