yeah, Steve Martin, especially, since he had a hand in writing the script... the bulk of the special features look cool, though... i'll be standing in line the day this one's released, for sure!

For a relatively straight-ahead family comedy, The Pink Panther DVD offers a surprising assortment of supplements. Apart from an enthusiastic commentary by director Shawn Levy, a large group of deleted and extended scenes with optional commentary, a pair of music videos by international pop sensation Beyoncé (who portrays an international pop sensation in the movie) and a making-of featurette, there are a couple of interesting bonuses that make this cat a lot cooler than all the other kitties. First, there's an informative and respectful featurette about the legendary original Pink Panther animation, as designed by Fritz Freleng, in addition to a sleek alternate three-dimensional animated opening sequence by London-based Nexus Productions. A trio of "Sleuth Cam" sequences that zero in on the set up and shooting of three scenes in the film are fascinating, as they reveal the all too tedious and repetitive nature of film production. One such segment follows the mounting of an action scene in a crowded soccer stadium, as Levy and a crew of co-directors shout out orders through bullhorns, trying to wrangle an outdoor arena teeming with thousands of extras. Watch it and you won't doubt a filmmaker's insistence that directing a crowd scene is similar to a general barking out orders to his troops.
