Bishop Fenwick's 'Panther' production pretty in pink

PEABODY | Bishop Fenwick drama students are seeing pink.
The student actors will sport the rosy hue for "The Pink Panther Strikes Again," a comedy that runs this weekend at the Catholic high school.
When it came to costumes, director Erin Grocki said she considered just pinning tails or making ears until she found a 1980s pattern on an online auction site and secured the design.
"It was a bidding war," she said.
Grocki and four others sewed the seven body suits from scratch within a month. With the detail of eyes and muzzle, the Pink Panther heads were the most nettlesome to construct, she said.
"There's a lot of intricate detail," the director said.
The students found the craftsmanship impressive, but at least one was a bit skeptical.
"Honestly, I was afraid," said junior Anne Mooney, one of the script's seven Pink Panthers. "Now, that it's all come together, I'm very pleased."
The finished costumes were an instant hit with the cast and crew of 55.
"Just wearing it in general is fun," sophomore Chrissie O'Brien said.
"They feel like pajamas," senior Katii O'Brien said.
The Pink Panthers don't have any lines, and their faces are obscured by the headpieces. The seven of them had to learn to exaggerate their movements with the outfits, Grocki said.
"You have to make your actions bigger," Katii O'Brien said.
Grocki said students are asking what will happen to the outfits after the production.
"Even the boys are asking if they can have one," she said.
The Pink Panther movie series and its remakes helped make a school production an easy sell to the teen actors.
"I was surprised," she said. "A lot of the kids had seen the movies and loved them."
