Local filmmakers seize spotlight in Tiburon
Paul Liberatore
Marin filmmakers are well represented in the Tiburon International Film Festival, March 13-21 at the Corinthian Yacht Club and the Tiburon Playhouse.
Terry Castle of Belvedere talks about her father, the horror movie director William Castle, in the Northern California premiere of the documentary "Spine Tingler!" It screens March 18 at the Playhouse.
San Rafael's Janine deBoisblanc produced "Her Best Move," a coming-of-age feature about a girl who's a high school soccer star. It's showing March 17 at the Playhouse with the short film "Covert Coins," directed by Steve Gatlin of Novato and starring San Rafael comedian Michael Pritchard.
In addition, former Tiburon resident Maz Jobrani stars in "A Season of Madness," a fairy tale gone wrong about a woman trying to escape an arranged marriage.
The festival will screen more than 200 films from some 90 countries. Many name filmmakers will be in attendance, including Blake Edwards of "Pink Panther" fame and Bob Rafelson, director of the classic "Five Easy Pieces."
Special events include the opening night film "Twins for President" at the Tiburon Playhouse with director Miguel Angel Calvo Buttini on hand; Sam's Cafe hosts a "Meet the Filmmakers Party" with champagne, oysters, hors d'Ïuvres and live entertainment; a Festival Fiesta on the upstairs patio at Guaymas Restaurant for a tribute to Edwards, Rafelson, John Wayne's family and other filmmakers.
A Wrap Party on March 20 at the Bella Vista Room at Servino Ristorante includes live entertainment, food and drinks and discussions about who'll win the festival's Golden Reel Awards.
The Closing Night Celebration and Awards Ceremony brings the festival to a grand finale with the Golden Reel Award winners, music and entertainment March 21 at the Corinthian Yacht Club.
