New York, NY -- Two members of the radical animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals confronted singer-actress Beyonce Knowles regarding her professed love of fur coats at a chic Manhattan eatery last week.
According to a VH1 music channel spokesperson, the activists won an eBay auction offering dinner with the star and her family at a top Manhattan restaurant. They outbid thousands of fans for the opportunity to meet and eat with the popular singer.
Upon arriving at the bistro, the "winners" began harassing Knowles over the furs she wears and wanted to know why they are used by her own fashion label.
Witnesses said that the singer, considered one of the most beautiful women in the world by several entertainment magazines, appeared shocked as the PETA members harangued her over her collection of fur coats.
Knowles was speechless, but her mother and sister defended her and the restaurant owners ejected the loud activists from their chic eatery. A video of the meeting at the celebrity-frequented Nobu restaurant was made by the campaigners and obtained by the American website TMZ.com.
During the meal, the activists attempted to use a portable DVD player to show Knowles how animals are killed for their fur to create fashion wear for the likes of the singer, who's starred in the motion pictures "The Pink Panther" and "Austin Powers."
The opportunity to eat with the singer was offered by the VH1 music channel as part of an auction which would benefit its Save the Music Foundation, according to officials from it's parent company Viacom.
Knowles' publicist told the news media that the 24-year-old star had no comment to make about the confrontation. The young singer originally performed with the hit girl-group Destiny's Child before embarking on a successful solo career.
Police could not identify the PETA activists and one source in the NYPD told this writer that Knowles declined to press criminal harassment charges against the two members if and when they were apprehended.
While many in the entertainment industry support PETA, they were recently criticized by feminists for exploiting women in an ad campaign that included actresses and models posing in the nude. Martha Stewart volunteered to appear in a PETA video, as well.
