Martin to write life story Scribner will release 'Born Standing Up'
By STEVEN ZEITCHIK
After years of churning out screenplays as a vehicle for his own characters, Steve Martin will wield the pen to tell the story of his own life. Scribe on pics including "The Pink Panther," "L.A. Story" and "The Jerk" has sold his memoir to CBS division Scribner, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. Company will release it under the title "Born Standing Up" on an as-yet-undetermined date.
Book was sold to the publisher for what's believed to be a seven-figure sum after making the rounds among Gotham houses.
Martin, who has never told his own story, has penned several novels, including "Shopgirl," which he adapted for the Buena Vista pic in which he starred.
Martin is one of the few thesps with cachet in both Hollywood and the book world, even hosting biz's tweedy National Book Awards.
But those seeking Hollywood dish may have to wait. Martin's tome will focus on his days as a standup comedian and will end before he became a film star -- no doubt setting things up for the sequel.
