Warren Batchelder, animator of well over 200 Warner Bros. and Pink Panther cartoons, died February 12 in Malibu, California, The Animation Guild Local 839 of IATSE announced. He was 89.
Born in Los Angeles in 1918, he worked for WB, UPA, Ed Graham, DePatie-Freleng and Marvel from 1936 until his retirement in 2002. In 1987, he received the Golden Award from The Animation Guild.
Batchelder joined the Robert McKimson unit as an animator in 1958. His first screen credit was for the Merrie Melody Feather Bluster, directed by McKimson and starring Foghorn Leghorn. He moved to DePatie-Freleng and, though uncredited, was an animator for the main titles of the 1963 feature film The Pink Panther -- which led to many cartoon shorts for DFE.
He was an animator for such TV series as Super President (1967), Here Comes the Grump (1969), The Houndcats and The Barkleys (both 1972), The Oddball Couple (1975), Baggy Pants & the Nitwits and What's New, Mr. Magoo? (both 1977), and The All New Pink Panther Show (1978).
Batchelder was an animation director for Marvel Productions' 1983 TV series Dungeons & Dragons, and was a sequence director for Marvel's Transformers (1984) and G.I. Joe (1985). As well, he animated individual episodes of Linus! The Lion Hearted (1964) and Doctor Dolittle (1970).
For television, he was an animator on The Hoober-Bloob Highway (1975); Bugs Bunny's Easter Special (1977); A Pink Christmas (1978); Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales (1979); Pink Panther in the Olym-pinks, Daffy Duck's Easter Show and Pontoffel Pock, Where Are You? (all 1980); and The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat (1982).
Batchelder animated the WB theatrical compilations The Looney, Looney, Looney Bugs Bunny Movie (1981) and Bugs Bunny's 3rd Movie: 1001 Rabbit Tales (1982). He was sequence director on the direct-to-video Bigfoot and the Muscle Machines (1985) and directed cartoon sequences on the 1986 video Transformers: Five Faces of Darkness (1986).
