“Pink Panther Deux” star Andy Garcia said slain Redskins Pro-Bowl safety Sean Taylor is a hero.
Garcia said Taylor - who died after being shot in a home invasion earlier this week - was killed protecting his girlfriend, who is the actor’s niece and the mother of Taylor’s baby.
The Washington Redskins safety’s “heroic action” is a “testament to his humanity and courage,” Garcia told the Miami Herald.
Jackie Garcia was with her football-star boyfriend early Monday morning when a burglar broke into their Florida home.
Garcia said the couple heard noises early Monday morning and Taylor, 24, got up to investigate leaving Jackie and their 18-month old daughter, also named Jackie, hiding in the bed.
Taylor was confronted by the gun-wielding intruder and was shot in the leg. He died in a nearby hospital later that day.
“His heroic action on that tragic night saved their life,” the “Ocean’s Thirteen” star said in a statement. “His spirit will live forever, in our hearts and through the legacy of his achievements and the family he leaves behind.”
Garcia’s niece and Taylor were high school sweethearts and went on to attend the University of Miami together. They had their first child together last year.
“Sean was known to many as an extraordinary athlete and unquestionable teammate,” Garcia, 51, continued. “To those of us who had the good fortune to count him as a member of our extended family, we will always remember him as a caring and loving individual, especially to his new family, his precious daughter, Jackie, and to the love of his life and mother to his child, my niece Jacqueline.”
Wednesday the Miami-Dade police said authorities had “no reason to think this was anything other than a burglary or a robbery.” There were no suspects.
