since this film is still in theaters, be forewarned - i tried to limit myself, but THIS REVIEW DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS!The Pink Panther 2 (2009)Inspect the UnexpectedPlot Notes - when the official synopsis for the film mentioned that Clouseau would team up with bumbling detectives from around the world to solve this mystery, I must admit, the idea scared me... thankfully, none of the other bumblers really out-shined Clouseau either in wit or in comedic silliness... fans of the classic films may notice that the film actually bears strong similarities to Return of the Pink Panther, though thankfully (again) it's all done in a fresh way... and references to the '06 film are present but not overbearing... Cast Notes:- Steve Martin - picking up where he left off, Martin continues to bring fresh jokes in with Clouseau - none of that over-done "That felt guud!" or "I am an officer of the lieau", though it would be nice to hear an ocasional "Yes, I know that!" now and then... i love that they took the time to point out how politically incorrect Clouseau is in this film (even including a wonderful "My little yellow friend" for those of us who miss Cato), though i hate that he seems to have learned his lesson by the end of the film... maybe they'll find a little of that incorrectness left in him for the next film, though... i didn't notice the trench coat anywhere, which is sad, since it's kinda been a staple in every movie, but to be honest, if you're not looking for it, you probably won't miss it...
- Jean Reno - Reno returns as Clouseau's sidekick, Ponton, who has an inexplicable respect for Clouseau - even referring to him as "the greatest detective in the world" which, for purists, is a little odd since we're used to the model that the only people who really respect Clouseau are those who have never met him... it doesn't hamper the film, so it's not that important, but i thought it was an interesting side-note... Ponton's role is greatly diminished in this film compared to the last one, which surprised me... and Ponton's children more or less took over as Clouseau's sparring partners, which was funnier than i thought it would be after watching the trailers... they even have a great scene reminiscent of the old Cato battles, which was absolutely fantastic!
- Emily Mortimer - Nicole ventures into new territory in this film, allowing us to see what a jealous Clouseau looks like when she gets involved with another man... the wedding scene was funny enough, though if/when they make a third film in the series, i wonder where they're going and what they can do with that relationship...
- John Cleese - Cleese's Dreyfus is very similar to what we saw of Kevin Kline's take on the character in the previous film... Dreyfus is still very self-centered and self-promoting, even trying to take credit for Clouseau's work at the end, just like Kline's Dreyfus did... Cleese gives a solid performance, but he's under-used... his best moment in the film is before the title sequence even roles, which is unfortunate... still, i like his version of Clouseau's boss better than Kline's for some intangible reason... hopefully he will stick around, go psycho, and please us all with his repeated attempts to assassinate Inspector Clouseau in an upcoming adventure!
- Lily Tomlin - with an appearance and demeanor that reminded me immediately of Clouseau's accent coach in 2006, Tomlin's "PC Coach" provided some great laughs... i would love to see them find a role for her in any future Panther (a la Graham Stark in the old series), though perhaps i'm a little biased since she is my distant cousin...
- Aishwarya Rai - the only thing i have to say is that she was absolutely perfect, and she brought a lot of class to the film, IMO... so glad she was a part of it!
Animated Titles - what i like about the titles for this film is that they look both very classic and very modern... the traditionally-drawn 2D characters are placed in a 3D universe like i've never seen before... i literally was in awe at the appearance and crispness of the whole sequence... no specific gags were really specifically impressive, but it was just very fresh and did its job by making me excited about the film to follow... very good! Music - as impressive as the animated titles were, the film's music, by-and-large, was not much to speak of... of course they used the classic Pink Panther theme, which sounded as good as ever, but the bulk of the film's score sounded like it was lifted straight off the soundtrack to the 2006 film... there may have been one or two original tracks, at best... my expectations were much higher, but it's almost as if they said, "well, i don't guess we can do much better than we did for the last film" and they just didn't even try... Special Note - i found plenty to laugh about in this movie, but at the same time, i'm concerned that perhaps MGM didn't know where its audience was... in the '06 film, they played to a mostly kid-friendly crowd, but several overt sexual references in this one made it something i would recommend for a slightly older public... the '06 venture had some sexual references, but not near the level of this film, IMO...

[/quote] Well that makes two of us, for sure! Great review! I agree with a lot of that. Especially the Special note. I made a thread about that in the PP2 section, as a matter of fact.

Anyway, is there an explanation about the Pink Panther belonging to the museum & not Xania..? i don't think it's explicitly stated, but it's not a far leap of the imagination to believe that she either donated it or (more likely, IMO) had it on loan to the museum... it's not really a big problem, IMO... how did the diamond end up in a museum in RetOTPP when it was previously owned by the Princess in TPP63? i think it's interesting that in both of the new films, the diamond is mentioned as "the symbol of French pride" or something like that, whereas in the previous series, it had nothing to do with French pride - it just happened that a Frenchman was the one who recovered it...

I have to say, I enjoyed this film much better than the first one. Martin was once again in fine form, and I liked the story better. I also thought the music was better this time around. It almost felt like a throwback to the older movies with the 60s kind of vibe that the music gave off.
Let's hope for PP3!

It was a large egg-shaped diamond in the films in the 70s/80s, though, after being set in a necklace in the original Panther movie, wasn't it?

The Pink Panther 2 (2009)I went into the cinema expecting something extremely similar to the first and thought I might as well just enjoy it and not take it too seriously. If you disliked the first (to an extent, like myself) then you probably won't like this either. But the film is good fun and mindless entertainment for an hour and a half. The plot is very interesting with the "Dream Team" storyline and I didn't find it too predictable. CastSteve Martin as Clouseau isn't really given any more depth than he had in the first one but I guess that's not really expected. He's still entertaining and different from Sellers - I'd rather Martin did a fresh approach to the character without being a replica of Sellers. But it was nice to get some links back to the old movies with " My little yellow friend" Martin is amusing in his delivery especially with lines liek " I wooooouldn't dooooo that" and when he's checking out the women in the hall " Nooo I deeedn't" Jean Reno/Emily Mortimer - Reno is always a joy to watch although in this he doesn't feature in as many gags as he did at the start. Mortimer is given a bit more depth and the love-story between Vincenzo & Nicole made for interesting watching. John Cleese - I'm a huge Cleese fan anyway so to see him as my favourite PP character was good. We only see one moment of him showing the crazy side to the character and he seems a bit more reserved in his madness than Lom's version. Either way his scenes are usually quite good and it was good casting. I'd rank him alongside Kevin Kline's Dreyfus because both are very entertaining in the role, Lom is still top though. Favourite scene's with Dreyfus are the opening pre-title scene and also the raid on the office at the end with Cleese shouting " Hamburger!" Andy Garcia/Yuki Matsuzaki/Alfred Molina - All of three of the Dream Team are reasonably interesting character. The scene with Pepperidge and Clouseau's decduction skills is quite funny but it's really Molina's biggest scene. Garcia pretty much sleepwalks through the movie but again it's nice to see him in it. Lily Tomlin/Jeremy Irons - Both nice additions to the cast. Tomlin for comedic value as the political correctness coach and Jeremy Irons as the main suspect. Aishwarya Rai - I didn't really get the hype over Rai and still don't really. She wasn't very impressive in this and her acting was worse than Beyonce's IMO. Molly Sims - Well I was looking for her but couldn't see her, maybe I was zoned out lol LocationsThe Paris ones are similar to TPP06 and are fantastic, as were the ones in Rome and Avellaneda's house. Music Nothing particularly that stood out for me, it was all very similar to TPP06. The TitlesI'd say these are actually my least favourite of all the Panther titles. I just found them very generic and a bit dull. HighlightsThe scene where we're watching Clouseau through Avellaneda's security systems as he searches the grounds Cleese's first scene before the titles with Geoffrey Palmer. Dreyfus smashing his head then coming back all calm and collected. The raid on the offices and " Damberger" scene Lily Tomlin's scenes as Mrs. Berenger Clouseau as the Pope at the Vatican ----------------------------------------------- The Wedding with Nicole and Clouseau was a part that I really didn't think was that necessary, I don't mind as long as they don't introduce baby Clouseaus. ----------------------------------------------- Lowpoints The fight between Clouseau and the kids. I'd also agree with BC007 about the shampoo scene. The parking ticket scene at the start _______________________________________ New Ranking1. The Pink Panther Strikes Again 2. Revenge of the Pink Panther 3. Return of the Pink Panther 4. The Pink Panther (1963) 5. A Shot in the Dark 6. Inspector Clouseau 7. The Pink Panther (2006) 8. The Pink Panther 2 9. Curse of the Pink Panther 10. Trail of the Pink Panther 11. Son of the Pink Panther

Aishwarya Rai - I didn't really get the hype over Rai and still don't really. She wasn't very impressive in this and her acting was worse than Beyonce's IMO. I strongly disagree. She was the one perfect thing about the new movie, IMO!
