Well, I understand what you are saying. I like Roger Moore, and maybe a continuance of the role with him would have been interesting. But if it is like you say, I find it more confusing than funny. My would Clouseau, who wants to hide out, get made to look like a famous actor, when that famous actor is still living? Now if the secret plot was to assassinate the real Roger Moore, and have the Clouseau/Moore take his place, then that might have been an interesting plot, but then the Clouseau/Moore would have to act and make movies in the role of Roger Moore. And I still find it odd that Sleigh gives Moore a photo of Clouseau to autograph, even if he does turn it over, which I didn't notice. I know it's not important or anything, and over all I liked this movie more than Trail and Son. But still this part I found was confusing more than funny. But who is the girl that helps Sleigh, that does the kicks? She is way hot.

Hi, Well, if this is the case, I think it was a bad move in the movie. I mean, then why didn't Sleigh when he saw David Niven, say "David Niven! let me have your autograph!". It's just not right for fictional characters played by famous actors to mix the two in a fictional movie. And why would Clouseau want to get made to look like Roger Moore the actor? It still doesn't make sense to me, and if this is how the script is, I think it was a mistake(ie; dumb).

I watched this again last night, and it is a good one. It has my favorite disguise, the Godfather. It also has the inflatable parrot. If I had to be critical of anything, I guess it's Simone. Her character was sometimes too corny. But overall, I think this is my 3rd favorite.

Was Roger Moore's image in the movie meant to be Roger Moore the actor, that the characters in the movie would know? And why then did Wass give him a photo of Peter Sellers to sign for his autograph?

When I recently bought all the DVD in the last couple of weeks, this was the 1st one I watched. I don't recall if I had seen this one before, and I had with Return, Strikes, Shot, PP. After watching it, I thought is was good. I probably should rewatch it, as I have since recently watched all the other titles recently since that one, and sometimes they are starting the blend in my mind. But I think Revenge is my 3rd favorite. Strikes, Return, Revenge, being my top 3.

I was unsure about this one, as I was about the other non-Sellers titles. But after I bought all the others, I went ahead and got this one too, to complete the collection.
I watched this with my father. He's not an original PP fan, but can appreciate the older titles.
Anyway, I was happy with this one. I found it funny in a few spots. I'm not a laugh out loud type, and most comedy doesn't affect me like that, but a few times I did.
Martin wasn't bad, nor did I think the rest of the actors bad. If I had to complain about anyone, it would be Kline's character. Why would he hide behind that curtain?
But overall, I liked this, and I think Martin is the best non-Sellers Clouseau, well, only Arkin really played that role as well. But I like PP(06) WAY WAY more than Son, and much more than Curse, and Trail, and even better than IC.
I'd give it a thumbs up.

Dreyfus, did you ever finish it?
To me, Son is the worst. And regardless of the story, it is Benigni that ruins it, IMO, for his character is like an escapee from a lunatic asylum.
He is just too nuts, and crazy acting. No one can be that wacko. It just ruins it for me. Lom is the only thing holding this together at all.
But even Lom is washed out at this point.(what's Lom's status these days?)
I might watch it again, just to see if I can appreciate it any more.

The best thing about this movie, IMO. Is the story, and the scenery. My problem is with Arkin. I do think Arkin is WAY better than Benigni though, but also suffers from a mental condition, which Sellers, Wass, and Martin did not.
I mean to offense to people with mental conditions, but Arkin acted too retarded. Like when he was going to get his plum pudding, and when he was trying to explain the bank robbery, and just his actions in general, and the way he spoke, was like he was mentally slow. His character reminded me of Borat in many ways, but Borat even didn't seem retarded. I know this may be an un-PC term, and I don't mean to offend anyone.
Now we point the finger usually at the actor, but his dialogue, style, etc, must also be from the screenplay and director, so maybe Arkin could have done it better with different material and people.
While not Clouseau, I liked Wass' character more, but I like the story in IC more than Curse.

PP(06) is better than Curse in every way. Martin is better than Wass, and the story in 06 was better too.
I do think this was better than Trail. but only because it's part 2 of that, and wraps it up.
Wass isn't too bad. What is worst about this movie is the story, I think. Basically the same as Trail, but with Wass doing what the woman reporter did in Trail.
What did confuse me in this movie was the ending, when Wass 1st encounters Moore, and says, "it's you!". Now what did he mean? Who is this "you" he refers to? Then he asks for Moore's autograph, and he gives him a photo of Clouseau to sign. Now what was that all about? Did he realize Moore, Turk was really Clouseau? This left me confused, wondering if Wass knew what was going on, and falsley reported Clouseau dead.

As it is right now, this is my favorite PP film. Everything was just right, and it couldn't be topped. Revenge was good, but could not compete with Strikes. Lom is great as always. The Sellers/Lom team really is the formula for these films, I think.

Hi,
I watched this movie for the 1st time a week or so ago. I was very unhappy with it. I later looked it up online and learned the story behind it.
My 1st impression is it could have been done way way better. It could have had the Sellers footage more spread out. Instead it takes about half the movie without any Sellers in it, albiet for some flashbacks.
But I think this movie really was just made at all, to be a set up for Curse. Being it was filmed at the same time, with the same actors. It seemed like one last attempt to milk Sellers name, and image, and create a set-up for Curse. I have read also that this would have been better if somehow Trail and Curse were combined into one movie. Perhaps.
When I 1st stumbled on the Big Lots sale, I didn't think I wanted any but the Sellers titles. Which is what I picked up then. But then after I watched and read about Trail, it was incomplete, and so I went back to Big Lots, and picked up Curse, to end it out. I also picked up Son and IC then as well, figuring I may as well have the whole collection.
But on it's own, Trail just leaves you hanging, and only provides at all for the 1st half. Lom is good as always.... but all the "looking" for Clouseau just got boring to me.
I do want to watch it again. I only saw it that one time, and that's the impression I got.

I think the best non-Sellers PP is the Martin(06) one. If I had to introduce someone to PP films with a non-Sellers title, it would be the Martin(06) one.
Second best non-Sellers would have to be the Arkin movie, but this is based more on the actual movie, because my 3rd pick would be Curse, and while I did think Wass was OK, I thought the Curse story was worse than the Arkin movie. If that makes sense.
3rd best is Wass. Last is Benigni(his name just does not stick).
Not to offend anyone who is or has any mental issues, I found the Arkin portrayal to speal and act as if mentally disabled to a degree, and the Benigni(sp?) Son, to be like an escapee of a lunatic asylum.
So actor-wise, I think Wass is 3rd. But I found the Arkin movie story better than Curse. Of course most of this depends on the story and screenplay.
But after Sellers, Martin is my next choice. A toss-up with Wass and Arkin next, and far last is Stanley Spudowski, I mean, Benigni.

Hi Dreyfus,
I made a new thread for Inspector Clouseau. I know this forum isn't very active, but I thought each title should get it's own thread. I finished watching it yesterday, and the 1st PP is my next one to see, though I haven't seen it in a while.

Hi,
Yesterday I finally finished watching Inspector Clouseau. I'd started it the night before, but was too tired, so I finished it yesterday.
I had never seen this before, nor heard of it before. Overall, I thought is was ok. Better than Curse and Son. But still when I watch Arkin's portrayal, I keep hearing and seeing Borat. Now I like Borat, but Sellers portrayal was not too off the edge, I don't think.
Having never seen this before, it did not have any classic scenes that stand out, from having seen something more than once. The camera/photoshoot scene reminded me of the Austin Powers.
If this movie, as it is had Sellers, I think it would be a lot better. And that is mainly because Sellers is who we think of as Inspector Clouseau, and his portrayal, as I said before, isn't as nutty as Arkin's is. Maybe it's the way he spoke...
For what it is, I thought it was OK. I'd watch it again. Probably better the second time. I think really the main low-point in this for me, was Arkin's speaking style. He sounded like he was mentally slow, and often acted as such. And Sellers wasn't.
I have seen the 1st PP movie, but it's been a while, and that's the next one I will view.
Carl
PS. I really love those small euro cars.

Hi,
Last night I watched A Shot In the Dark.
Since I recently bought all the PP DVDs within the last 2 weeks, I have so far watched in this order:
Revenge Of the Pink Panther Trail Of the Pink Panther The Pink Panther Strikes Again Curse Of the Pink Panther The Pink Panther(06) Son Of the Pink Panther Return Of the Pink Panther A Shot In the Dark
So far. Having watched these in this non-chronological order, maybe it was not the best way. So far I still have Strikes Again as my favorite, followed by Return. What struck me right away when I started watching Shot, is how young Herbert Lom was! As well as Sellers, but Lom really looked younger/different. From what I read, I think there was a 10yr span between Shot and Return, so age must have had an effect somewhat.
Anyway, Shot was great. Very good. I did notice many of the gags here where played again in later films and variant of. While I did really like it, I am not sure if I like it more than Revenge. There is a bit of difference with the over the top aspect of the Clouseau character from Shot and Return, and the later ones.
As I watched Shot, I wonder if I have even seen this before? Yes, I must have on TV, as many of these scenes I did remember, the billiards, and sauna scenes.
Surely a classic. And the 2nd film in the series. Last night I started watching Inspecter Clouseau. I haven't finished it yet, I will today, and then give my comments.
