this is all very interesting, but perhaps this thread is a bit derailed... let's try to use this thread for discussion of the likelihood/sanity of casting Ed Helms has a new Clouseau, and if there are new rumors or news about the possibility (or lack thereof) of a new Panther film in the works, lets give news articles and such threads of their own so that people can continue talking about specific items without too much confusion... that, or we can just rename this thread "rumors", and post all rumors here, but we still need to post any real news in its own thread to keep it all straight, ok?

I'd say, rename the thread rumors. Much more interesting that way. I don't even know who Ed Helms is, nor do I want to, really. I recently watched Ebert and Roeper's opinions on the first Steve Martin Pink Panther film and I think they're spot on. The old movies with Sellers are there, they're not gone, they're still available so why the hell make new movies with a hasbeen actor who's never been that good anyway? Anyway.

...so why the hell make new movies with a hasbeen actor who's never been that good anyway?i find that to be a very debatable point, since Martin has long been one of my favorite actors, but that's perhaps also a question/debate for another thread... thread title has been changed to RUMORS, so let's just keep this thread for any rumors we want to talk about concerning the possibility of a new movie and who might be cast, etc., but if you have genuine news of any sort or think you might, please give it its own thread...

After a long drawn out and very public process, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer confirmed yesterday that a federal bankruptcy court has approved a prepackaged bankruptcy plan in which its lenders will exchange nearly $5 billion in debt for ownership of the company...

I just don't expect another Pink Panther movie for a long while. Just from a marketing standpoint, how would they sell it? The second one bombed because the public decided the first Martin PP movie was just another brain-dead screwball comedy. They didn't stay away because they were reading every review of Pink Panther II.
It's like Austin Powers: what could they put in a commerical now that would get you to go to another Austin Powers movie? Recasting Austin Powers the lead role wouldn't do it.
I think they need to (and ultimately will) wait a few more years and do something far different from the Steve Martin movies.
The only chance I see of rekindling interest in a Pink Panther movie right now would be if it was done by the French *in* French. If the next Pink Panther movie was a foreign film, that's the only way I see the movie-going public embracing it so soon after PPII (and that's propably still less preferrable than just giving the series a little breather).

i'm not sure the all-French Pink Panther would be a great idea - you would lose a lot on the character's mispronunciations, at the least - but i hear what you're saying...
nice to see you around!
btw, i have heard several rumors that they are making a 4th Austin Powers movie... like you, i just can't picture it... i don't know what they could do that would seem new enough to make me want to see it... but we'll see!

revisited the forum after an absence as I heard the news of the passing of Mr Edwards
i understand what tournier is suggesting, but it doesn't have to be done in French.. rather, produce it OUTSIDE of hollywood, even as an independent, with a foreign cast.
any further Pink Panther films from Hollywood, with Steve Martin or not, is just going to be a further insult to the original series.
a similar example i can give you is the "Get Smart" film with Steve Carell that came out - that film was completely pointless. had none of the spirit or class that made the original so great. took Don Adams' spirit and made a few more bucks off it.
i think fans such as those here could make a better Pink Panther film than Hollywood.

Here is the text in case anyone has difficulties with the link:
NEXT YEAR MARKS the 50th anniversary of the first "Pink Panther" movie. This starred David Niven, Robert Wagner, Claudia Cardinale, Capucine and, but of course, Peter Sellers as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau. Sellers would go on to reprise the role in "A Shot in the Dark," and make three more "Pink Panther" movies. MGM is bringing out a lavish DVD/Blu-ray box set of all the Sellers "Panther" pics. This will include cartoons--as well as the sly animated Pink Panther that opened and closed the movies. Steve Martin, who also played Clouseau a couple of times, has been planning another "Panther" movie. The script is being worked on.

Steve Martin is better as Jacques Clouseau. I hope he's not replaced by Ed Helm. Also, Steve Martin wants Olga Bariosova (from The Pink Panther strikes Again) to appear in the new one. Dreyfus might go crazy in the new one
