Unfortunately there have been talks of a third film, with Steve Martin. He is apparently 'negotiating' for PP3, although I'm not sure exactly how recent those negotiations are and if that MTV article posted before me is the final word.
I've got nothing against Steve Martin as an actor. I've enjoyed his films, but it doesn't work with him. Mr Sellers is irreplacable, but for the sake of a reboot/remake... the only suggestion I have is Sasha Baron Cohen, who is a big fan of Mr Sellers himself.

I believe the only hope for THE PINK PANTHER 3 is a huge boost in DVD sales. The box office takings were about 50% of the first one worldwide. THE PINK PANTHER 2 is the better film by far in my view, but I fear not having Beyonce hurt the film. The advertising campaign was also dreadful. Too much emphasis was placed on Martin's first effort.

The advertising campaign was also dreadful. Too much emphasis was placed on Martin's first effort. i agree with that. even if the first one were more popular than it was, the new film's trailers should have been more about what's good about the new movie. i also felt like there wasn't ENOUGH promotion for the 2nd film. if you werent a panther fan, you probably didn't know it was coming out til the last minute, in theaters or on DVD, either one, just because there seemed like there was almost no advertizing beforehand. there could have been merchandise tie ins and all kinds of stuff, but i guess they just didnt wanna spend the money on it. you gotta spend money to make money.

SONY (Columbia) help co-finance and co-distribute the film but I'm wondering, since the DVD rights would be reverting back to MGM (with distributed by 20th Century Fox), if Sony ran a lackluster campaign since they would be losing the major cash cow of DVD sales and rentals.

I don't know if there will be a third installment for the PP06 series. But while I never had a problem with Steve Martin being the star of a Pink Panther film, I initially wanted PP06 to be a sequel to the original series, with Steve as someone other than Clouseau. I thought, "Feed me any crazy story about why he's the main character, and I'll buy it - just not Clouseau."
But without Herbert Lom and Burt Kwouk, and without Blake Edwards directing, I figured it was just as well that Steve Martin was Clouseau. I thought it was sad to lose those three, but I also thought maybe Steve could be second best to Peter Sellers - which would still be quite an accomplishment!
I went in the theatre with the lowest expectations, and up to the part where he tries to park the car and keeps crashing, I thought I made a big mistake going to see it. But soon I was enjoing it, and when it ended, I was glad I went!
Then I saw it sometime later, all the way through (since I recalled how much I enjoyed it) - and that second time I thought it was a big waste. And that has never happened to me before with a film! So I don't know - maybe I'll try again. But as I said in another post, I haven't seen the sequel yet.
But while I'm undecided now, I know either way I respect Steve Martin for originally saying no to being involved, and also for eventually deciding to do these films and keep Clouseau alive. And I feel he made both decisions out of respect for Peter Sellers and the Pink Panther body of work.

The Third movie in the current series is in the planning stages and currently has the working titles The Pink Panther 3-D and The Pink Panther Strikes Back. Producer Robert Simmonds announced in December 2009 following the excellent DVD sales of the 2nd film his plans to continue the series and that he is talking to The Office star Ed Helms about him taking over the role of Clouseau from Steve Martin, as MGM/Columbia feels the series needs younger actors.

This is a great news and I hope this will not end on that one and they will continue doing films and series of Pink Panther.

I posted elsewhere in this folder that David DePatie was interviewed in Gig Harbor's local papers last week and mentioned the script for the third Steve Martin Panther was about a third of the way complete. This is the first trustworthy update we've had as I strongly suspect the unsubstantiated rumor that Bob Simonds was pursuing Ed Helms for the next film appears to be rumor only. Bear in mind that the fate of MGM has to be resolved before anything concrete happens but perhaps we could see the film entering production a year from now.

Well Pink Panther 2 did make a moderate business of $75,871,032 worldwide. That money could purchase a lot of dounuts

Please no. No more "Dhambüüüüürger".
Make a fresh reboot with Matthew Rhys and try to forget and forgive Steve Martin for what he did.
