what's your opinion? was TPP2 good enough and/or will it make enough money to warrant a 3rd installment starring Steve Martin?

I hope there is a third. Though I cringe at the possibility of "Clouseau babies." How awful would that be? pretty awful! but yeah, id like a third. the opening night numbers were worse than the last film, though, so its gonna have to do really well on word of mouth if the studios gonna make enough money to be worth it to them, tho, unless maybe its just direct to DVD, which would also be pretty awful!

Well obviously MGM wants the franchise to continue. Unless it picks up steam over the next seven days domestically and overseas box office delivers, I think it safe to say this will be Mr. Martin's last PANTHER. Next up will either be a straight remake or a long, long rest before another reboot.
Sadly, Sony's production chief's remarks about not betting against a third film being made following the lackluster opening weekend need to be viewed in the proper context. Sony is not involved with the next Bond or potential Panther as their MGM deal is ending. His remark can be seen more as a reflection on what he expects MGM to do with the property and not what he would do were it Sony greenlighting another sequel.

I can't imagine a straightforward remake of one of the originals doing very well, regardless of who plays Clouseau. So many people already decry the '06 film as a Remake, they'd just have a field day if they actually did make a remake, wouldn't they?

Well, one way or another it will happen eventually. Most likely MGM On Stage's long-developing Broadway adaptations of THE PINK PANTHER and A SHOT IN THE DARK will probably move forward if MGM rests the film series. If the shows are successful, movie versions of the Broadway shows are always viable as THE PRODUCERS proved.

A Panther Broadway show would be interesting. I would imagine it might lack the magic of a film, though.

maybe if its a straightforward play, but when i think broadway, i think musicals. and i cant think of who they would actually cast as clouseau or dreyfus that would do a good job in a broadway musical. im not even sure who would be good if it was a straightforward play!

Here is an interesting scenario: Say that PP2 grosses between 40 and 50 million here in the US, about half of the first one. But the international box office is much higher, leading to a higher total gross than the first one. Would that lead to another movie?

If MGM can mount it with Simonds and Martin, probably - but domestic DVD sales will be an important factor.

the idea just struck me- wouldn't it be horrible if the Panther series ever became just a direct-to-dvd series like "Bring It On" or "American Pie Presents..." have become?

I think they'd loose a lot of fans at that point, me included. I'd like there to be a PP3. I was thinking about the idea of them re-casting Clouseau, but I think people have now accepted Martin in the role - so I doubt thats much of a possibility.
