Sony's PG-rated comedy sequel The Pink Panther 2 took in an estimated $3.3M on Friday falling 44% from the opening day of its 2006 predecessor which bowed at the same time of year. Look for the weekend debut to reach $11-13M.
Looks like the box office returns (12 million) was disappointing. Next weekend will be the big test. If it holds steady, then I have hope of a success film. The overseas box office will be play a huge part as well. I saw it today, and the theatre was crowded. I enjoyed it, much better than the first one.
Three other pictures opened in the top 10. The biggest disappointment was Steve Martin 's " The Pink Panther 2 ," which came in at No. 4 with $12 million. The first film in Columbia Pictures ' revived comedy franchise opened with $20 million in 2006 and ended up with $82 million. Despite the sequel's performance, Columbia's worldwide distribution president Rory Bruer said he "wouldn't bet against" a third film going into production.
