My top three:
1. The Pink Panther (Henry Mancini, 1963) 2. The Pink Panther (Christophe Beck, 2006) 3. Return of the Pink Panther (Henry Mancini, 1975)
As far as I'm concerned, the first one and the remake score stand head-and-shoulders above rest, with the first one the (close) winner of the two. You gotta love "It Had Better Be Tonight". ;D

well the winner just HAS to be the original Mancini score from 1963 (although i was never a huge fan of "It Had Better Be Tonight", myself), but i agree Christophe Beck did an excellent job with the newest film's score...
i also have to mention ASITD's score... the main theme song was excellent, and i really enjoyed "The Shadows of Paris", which played over the opening scene... if the Pink Panther theme from the first film had been included in this film, it's very likely that ASITD would've taken my vote for best soundtrack!

I watched A Shot in the Dark yesterday, and I agree. All it needs is the Pink Panther theme and it would easily be the best of the bunch.
Does anyone know if Mancini wrote the score for A Shot in the Dark before The Pink Panther? I know A Shot in the Dark was filmed first, but I know nothing about the post-production. If it was, that could explain the lack of the theme...?

i'm not sure when he wrote it for sure, but i would imagine he did write ASITD's score first, because my understanding was that ASITD was completely finished before they started working on TPP63, and it was just shelved because MGM didn't like it (which makes no sense to me!)...
i think it'd be interesting if somebody could do a little research to find out for sure whether ASITD was completely finished before TPP63 started production or not...

Its got to be The Pink Panther (Henry Mancini, 1963)
The original and the best.

Henry Mancini's first score was obviously the best of the lot.
He scored it as if he was scoring a serious movie, while the rest had lighter music suited more for comedies.
Christophe Beck's score worked extremely well, he became one of my favorites to take over the Bond series!
Hopefully Beck will be back for the Steve Martin sequel.

I think STRIKES AGAIN wins it for me. PANTHER is right after, but STRIKES AGAIN is so memorable, and its got one of my favorite themes ever - The Inspector Clouseau Theme. Nice, heartwarming and sweet. No wonder it was reused in the elevator scene in TRAIL and incorporated in that film's end title's music. It describes Clouseau, but also Sellers and his character.
I love that theme, I love that soundtrack!

It's true that the Soundtrack to the first Panther is great but my vote finally goes to TPPSA. The other themes that are included in the Main Title.. This is great. And then there is the wonderful song "Come to me" (I don't know how you feel...but I have to laugh everytime I hear to it... because I'm thinking about the Scene where it is played... ;D And then there is one of my favourite themes ever.. The Inspector Clouseau theme. This is simply fascinating, nice and I totally agree with georgelyttons description of it.

i voted for Return because it has that cool version of the pink panther theme song when the diamond is being stolen, and it also has some fun tracks later on. honoroble mintion goes to the soundtrack from the new movie by christophe beck, because it was a nice tribute to the earlier stuff but it was still modern.
