I thought of doing this tournament just to see the average rankings.
I plan on putting two films up against each other everyday. the one with the most votes goes through to the next round. The one with the least votes gets eliminated. We should eventually get a winner. Voting will probably go on for around 24 hours, then will be closed.
1st round:
The Pink Panther (2006)
vs
Son of the Pink Panther (1993)

great idea, Dreyfus! i may just do a mass e-mailing to let everyone know we're doing this, since not everybody tends to check in on a daily basis... maybe this'll help to pick up participation a little... my only concern is that folks will think it's too much like the poll already on the subject... this could potentially be a bit more fun, though, theoretically... have to see how it goes!
as for me, i vote for The Pink Panther (2006)...

Well I think we should keep this round open for longer so more people will join. Just to make the voting fairer.

Thanks Dreyfus.
And it SON OF THE PINK PANTHER, for me. Both films aren't THAT good, but I am rather fond of SON for a couple of reasons: 1)It was a film that provided Dreyfus with a logical progression of character (acceptance of the man Clouseau) and finally settling him down (for good) with an ex-fling of Clouseau's. 2)It stars Roberto Benigni, who did a much better job than that pretentious Steve Martin could've done, for the fact that he didn't pretend to be Clouseau himself, but his son. 3)It introduced me to Benigni and his work, which is fabulous (JOHNNY STECHINNO and THE MONSTER are highly enjoyable comedies, while LIFE IS BEAUTIFULL is his equivelant to Sellers' BEING THERE). 4)Its the last Blake Edwards film, and even if its obvious his work doesn't compare to his past glory, its nice to see him handle a film again, much less a Panther film. 5)The cartoon is the series' best after STRIKES AGAIN and RETURN. I love it!
And the absolute best rendition of the Pink Panther theme by Henry Mancini by the end of the film... Mancini's last go on the PP theme! Christopher Whats-his-name can't hold a candle to him.
Anyway, SON over PINK PANTHER RE-IMAGINED TRAVESTY 2006, for me...

Son of the Pink Panther. For the reasons georgelytton mentioned. I like the part in the openign credits where Henry Mancini has a cameo and hands the panther his baton. It's cool cause it's like a send-off to Henry Mancini, who would retire after this film was released, and then pass away.
And I like how in the end credits, Henry Mancini played the panther theme the traditional way with the sax riffs and horns and everything. Like an orchestra, the way it was originally done. Mancini didn't try to re-invent the theme with cheesy 70s/80s type music like he did for TRAIL and CURSE (well, ESPECIALLY Curse).
My only complaint about SON, is that they cut out a scene confirming Closeau's death. I'm not sure why they did that. Because we know Clouseau's stil alive at he end of CURSE, but we don't know much else afterwards.

2006. While Begnini is funny, he doesn't fit the feel of a Pink Panther film. He's too happy. Part of what made Clouseau funny for me was the fact that he'd never admit he was wrong and rarely smiled. He was kind of a jerk. Martin, on the other hand, took the role and dared to make it his own. There is enough Clouseau in his performance to give me the same feel the originals did , but enough that is new to make it fresh and original.
Close call though. Of the non-Sellers PP films, these were the two closest matched in quality.

The voting will last 2 days per round.
Well The Pink Panther (2006) recieved 4 votes
Whilst Son of the Pink Panther only managed 2 votes.
So The Pink Panther (2006) wins this and goes through. Say goodbye to Mr Benigini.
Round 2
Curse of the Pink Panther (1983)
Vs
Inspector Clouseau (1968)

ick, this one's gonna be difficult, but i think i'll go with Curse... with Curse, at least we have Moore's cameo, the Countess in the mud bath, and a pretty classy ending with the Lyttons Three... IC, on the other hand, was pretty much rubbish from start to finish...

Curse of the Pink Panther. Moore's cameo makes it worth seeing! Plus, seeing Wagner back.

Well, I think we can end the voting here for this round.
Too my dissapointment Inspector Clouseau (1968) has lost this round but Curse of the Pink Panther (1983) gets through with 3 votes to 0.
So the winner is Curse of the Pink Panther
We now move on to the Sellers films, where the voting should be closer.
Round 3
Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978)
Vs
Trail of the Pink Panther (1982)

I actually do like Trail. It's a great homage to Sellers who died three years earlier, and it highlights some of the best Panther moments.

neither is my favorite, but today i think i'll go with Trail as well... the stuff with Joanna Lumley was crap, but the first 45 minutes or so, coupled with the tribute that airs over the end credits are pretty good redeeming points...
