Coming soon to an historic barn near you: Movies under the stars.
After success starting an outdoor movie series last summer, the History Center of Olmsted County is planning to screen eight movies on the side of the Historic Stoppel Farmstead, 1195 West Circle Drive S.W., Rochester [Minnesota].
The series starts at dusk (approximately 9:30 p.m.) May 25 with a screening of the 1963 Blake Edwards comedy "The Pink Panther."
"We tried to choose a selection of classic movies and new classics," said the history center's Cheryl Finnegan.
Here's a look at the other films scheduled. Like "The Pink Panther," an approximate 9:30 p.m. showtime is expected for each:
• June 8: "The Maltese Falcon" (1941).
• June 29: "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961).
• July 13: A still to-be-determined Marx Brothers movie.
• July 27: "Star Wars" (1977).
• Aug. 10: "The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid" (1972).
• Aug. 24: "Grease" (1978).
• Sept. 7: "Arsenic and Old Lace" (1941).
The series started with four screenings last year, with as many as 250 people showing up, Finnegan said. .
"It was so popular last year," she said. "We really miss the drive-in movies and really enjoy getting outdoors and being under the stars and relaxing and watching a movie."
Admission for the movies is free; popcorn will be sold at the screenings.
People are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for seating, and no cars are allowed in the seating area. The movies will be projected onto a 15-foot-by-18-foot screen hung from the side of the barn. In the event of rain, the movies will be shown in the history center.
