Some of you probably know this but Romance of the PP was to be the 7th in the series and Sellers and Lom would have been returning for their roles. It was written by Peter Sellers and Jim Moloney. Peter Sellers death obviously stopped the filming. Only 2 drafts of the script are around today.
Maybe they will make this with Steve Martin?

i dunno... i once came across a website selling copies of one of the drafts of Romance, but theey were $14.95 and the site said it was missing a few pages, so i wasn't sure if it'd be worth my money or not... i may have to break down and get a copy, though, as i'm really curious about the direction Sellers would've gone with another film... but i just don't know if Martin would do a Sellers script, or how good it would be if he did... obviously, it would have to be revised, but who knows? maybe the next script will be heavy on ideas borrowed from it, at least...

Yeah, the scripts are around..i saw then on sale on at least one website, probably from the website Clouseau saw. A few people I have come across on various forums when searching in Yahoo have obtained copies of it, but I haven't been able to get in contact with them.. I'm from Australia though.. So it would cost more.. I would buy one though.. I dunno...
--(SPOILER ALERT FOLLOWING??)
I've got a Peter Sellers biography called "Mr Strangelove" which describes the storyline a bit.. I can't remember it all offhand but I recall that it's different to the other Pink Panther movies; apparently there is still the typical cato fight scene near the beginning but basically alot of it involves Clouseau romancing some underworld figure taking her out, and there is some typical idiocy but alot of it is him and her going out on dates or something like that, and the authorities are trying to convict her and have her arrested or something.. and eventually Clouseau leaves the police force and 'turns to the dark side' ..i dunno ... i can't remember, but I will edit this post and copy from the book when I get home with more specific details

thanks, ben... looking forward to it! according to Wikipedia, there were two drafts of the film... one was completed in December of 1979, and the other was completed in July 1980 (only about 8 days before Sellers' death!)... apparently, there were several differences between the '79 draft and the '80 draft, though both followed the same basic plotline... from my understanding, the ending is where the biggest difference between the drafts was, but again, all this comes from heresay, as i've never read the scripts... they were both co-written by Sellers and Jim Moloney, and Sidney Poitier was apparently attached to direct it when it was completed... the July 1980 version is available here for $14.99, if anyone's interested... i couldn't find the earlier one listed anywhere yet...

Thanks Clouseau. It's not a very big feature though, but it's maybe a paragraph and a half about it. I seriously might consider getting that script. Or I'll wait until next pay, next week, yeah I need to save a bit of money.
I'm new here by the way, sorry. Awesome board here. I've been a fan of peter sellers and the pink panther movies since i was born, I'm 20 now. Recently got a credit card, well not a full out one, but just one linked to my savings account bla bla bla, and I have discovered the merits of ebay.. Some valuables.. I'm not a big movie collector..I'm more of a music fan..but this movie is an exception. Anyway sorry I'll shut up with my life story.

glad to have you aboard, ben! i've considered buying the script, too, but money is also my issue... it's not that it's so expensive, but there are just too many other things vying for a piece of the pie right now, if you know what i mean...

Ok I'm really sorry for the delay..Here is all the information listed about "Romance of the Pink Panther", from the Peter Sellers biography "Mr Strangelove"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Romance of the Pink Panther would be different to the other Panthers, Peter told the Hollywood columnist Marilyn Beck. Clouseau will 'expose a side of himself no one has seen. He's going to be involved with a woman who's deeply in love with him, and we'll see his reaction to that.' There was still no word on who would play the woman, Anastasia Puissance. In fact, the script was not yet completed at the time. According to Peter, production wouldn't begin until August 1980, at the earliest.' Reportedly, Peter would be getting $3 million up front for the film - half of which, he claimed, had already been paid. He would also get 10 per cent of the gross. Estimating from the financial success of the last Panther, The Romance of the Pink Panther alone might earn him $8 million.
That Sidney Poitier rather than Blake Edwards was to direct The Romance of the Pink Panther seems not to have been the result of animosity between Peter and Blake. He'd filmed a cameo for Edward's latest picture, 10 (1979), which starred Dudley Moore, Julie Andrews and Bo Derek. Peter played drums in a jazz band, but the scene was cut before the film's release.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Peter had been working on the script of The Romance of the Pink Panther with a writer named Jim Moloney; the film's producer, Danny Rissner, had sent Peter some script notes, and Peter, after reading them on the yacht in the Aegean, had threatened to jump overboard. If UA baulked, he would drop the project.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Blake Edwards attempted to assume control of The Romance of the Pink Panther after Peter's death and offered the role of Inspector Clouseau to Dudley Moore, who turned it down.
Ok that's the most important parts mentioned about it. Sorry I hope I didn't dissapoint your anticipation hah.
EDIT: by the way im working on a pink panther movie fan website i decided, something else to occupy my time with, and i plan already to get as much information about "romance of the pink panther" as i can in it.. as a project

that's interesting... i suppose Moore's unwillingness to play Clouseau is what led to the film being scrapped and Edwards coming back with Trail and Curse... i wonder what Moore's portrayal would have looked like, had he decided to do it, but i'm afraid that even with Sellers, the next film in the series - whether it was Romance or Trail or whatever - wouldn't have done as well as the previous ones... IMO, Revenge showed that they were running out of ideas... maybe my opinion will change after reading the script to Romance, though... the whole issue to me is that they needed to reinvigorate the character, which could have meant redefining the whole series... if Sellers had died 1 or 2 years later, i can't even begin to imagine what shape the series might've taken after Romance... anyway, this is all very interesting... thanks, ben!

no problem clouseau.. yes i guess it is something unfortunately we will never know about.. sounds like it would have been very different.. in fact it sounds like it might have gone back to the idea of the earlier movies, not as 'stupid' as the later ones like pink panther strikes back if that makes any sense (not saying theyre stupid movies, but i found the earlier ones arent as crazy hah

That's interesting...I also didn't realise just how bad his physical condition was deterriorating, I know he had numerous heart attacks..but then again I haven't read too much into his background..
dern i wonder if that is the script that is for sale online or what..i am seriously going to consider buying that..

apparently, one gag that was meant for Romance of the Pink Panther made its way into 1993's Son of the Pink Panther...
this is quoted from a Google-cached message on the currently-under-construction forums at BlakeEdwards.com:

Interessting.
I didn't even know about Romance. Would be interessting to read the script I agree. But I wonder how in hell Sellers thought he could still play Clouseau when he really was in such a bad condition.
What I would also liek to know (maybe I make an own thread about it): Why did Sellers despise Edwards ?

Interessting. What I would also liek to know (maybe I make an own thread about it): Why did Sellers despise Edwards ? I think Sellers despised anybody who had a nagative opinion about any of his ideas or works (including his own daughter!). Sellers and Edwards had disagreements during all of the Pink Panther films really, and other films they made together (The Party).
